The students of Saint Patrick continued to epitomize the LaSallian mission by supporting a local scholarship and honoring first responders on 9/11.
On the Friday before Sept. 11 the National Honor Society organized a “dress down” day. Students were encouraged to make a small donation in exchange for the right to wear jeans, T-shirts and gym shoes to school for a day.
The effort raised nearly $1,000, and the students decided they would make a true difference with that money.
On the morning of 9/11 members of the National Honor Society delivered breakfast to three local fire stations and two nearby police stations. The contingent of Shamrocks also presented “Thank You” banners signed by students and staff at each station.
The remaining funds were donated to the Rich Pinskey/Hank Schueler Scholarship, which assists families going through the financial hardship of fighting cancer treatments and paying for a tuition-based program. Schueler is a former Shamrock who lost his battle with leukemia in 2007.
The scholarship is awarded annually by Ignite the Spirit, an organization that has donated more than a million dollars to ease the hardships of Chicago families.
Earlier this month, Rich Pinskey visited Saint Patrick, and the donation was presented to him by members of the National Honor Society.
