National Honor Society (NHS) students at Saint Patrick High School have held two fundraisers this year to raise money for nonprofit organizations in the community. The organizations – Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will each receive a check as a result of their efforts.
For the first fundraiser held in October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, NHS students sold t-shirts that read “Real Men Wear Pink” on the back and raised $200 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The t-shirts, $10 each, sold out in less than a week and more had to be ordered. Students, faculty and staff wore them as part of a “Pink Out” theme at the Shamrock football game on October 11 vs. Fenwick. Players also wore pink on the field and cheerleaders sold sweatshirts in support of the cause.
During Catholic Schools Week (Sunday, January 26 – Saturday, February 1), NHS students held a Bake Sale during Lunch Periods and raised $300 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “We figured we’d do something during Catholic Schools Week,” said NHS president Charlie Moskal ’20. “Everyone was excited about it and it felt like the ‘right’ thing to do.”
Moskal says he’s proud to be the first person in his family to be a member of the NHS at Saint Patrick. “It’s not only an honor, but something I can do to help St. Pat’s and the community around us.”
Students are inducted into the NHS chapter at Saint Patrick based on meeting the requirements related to the four pillars: Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Character. There are currently 46 members of the NHS at the school with a new class scheduled to be inducted in April.
