5900 West Belmont Avenue was abuzz with excitement as Olympic hopeful Joe Rau returned to his alma mater to share his journey and aspirations with the student body. The 2009 graduate, now three-time senior world team member, visited the school on May 20 to share thoughts on his upcoming trip to Paris to compete in the 2024 Olympic Games in Greco-Roman Wrestling.
The students and faculty gathered on Kurland Court to welcome Rau for an assembly and to watch the final match that clinched his spot in Paris. Known for his dedication and perseverance, Rau’s spoke of how his journey was never easy. He shared that he struggled many different times in high school and went on to say that “if he had ever let is food off the gas,” he would not be where he is today. During his speech, he recounted his experiences at Saint Patrick High School, reflecting on the foundation it provided for his athletic and personal development. He emphasized the importance of hard work, resilience, and setting high goals.
Rau also described the rigorous training and challenges he has faced in pursuit of his Olympic dreams. He spoke about the support he received from coaches, family, and friends, highlighting the significance of a strong support system. Rau’s humility and determination are infectious.
Rau received a standing ovation from the students and faculty and the Saint Patrick community is now eagerly anticipating his performance in Paris, ready to cheer him on as he represents his country (and the Shamrocks!) on the global stage in early August. Rau will depart for Paris the last week of July.
Joe Rau’s return to Saint Patrick High School was more than a homecoming; it was a celebration of dreams realized and a beacon of inspiration for future generations. His story inspires many students to aim high and strive for excellence in all their endeavors.
