Saint Patrick senior Dan Baker took sixth place at the IHSA State Wrestling Tournament.
After losing his first match at state, Baker rebounded in a big way by winning three consecutive matches (including a defeat over the top-ranked wrestler in his weight class) to secure his place on the medal stand.
Baker is just the 11th state place-winner in the history of the Shamrocks wrestling program, and the first since Steve Galiardo ’13. He completes his career with a varsity record of 73-30 – 38-11 his senior year – putting him 28th on the all-time wins list.
“Dan, as well as our other seniors, will be sorely missed next year,” coach Dominic Angelo. “Dan is a perfect example of a kid who did everything right, worked hard every day, trusted our system and competed at 110% of his ability every time he stepped on the mat. He is an excellent leader and his wrestling ability peaked at exactly the right time. I couldn’t be more proud of everything Danny has accomplished.”
Baker’s success at St. Pat’s has not been limited to the wrestling. He has a GPA over 4.0 and is a member of the National Honor Society.
