Shamrocks Make History as Super-Sectional Champions, Advance to State Playoffs

For the first time in school history, the Saint Patrick High School Shamrock Basketball team is heading to the IHSA State Playoffs after capturing the Super-Sectional Championship on Monday night. Under the leadership of longtime Head Coach Mike Bailey, who has been at the helm for over 30 years with 678 career wins, the Shamrocks have added another milestone to their storied basketball legacy.

Saint Patrick has a proud tradition of excellence, with 5 Sectional Titles, and 26 Regional Titles, along with countless Conference Championships. With just two head coaches in the past 66 years—Mike Bailey and Max Kurland—the Shamrocks’ basketball program has been built on consistency, discipline, and resilience. This year, St. Pat’s unveiled a brand-new gym floor featuring the names of these two legendary coaches, honoring their lasting impact on the program and the school.

This year’s squad is led by standout seniors EJ Breland, Anthony Favia, Naveah Hawkins, Cooper Kavanaugh and Nathan Nano, along with a talented core of sophomores and juniors. Their grit and determination have been key to the team’s success.

“I can’t begin to tell people how special this is for our school,” said Head Coach, Mike Bailey. “Advancing to State means the world to our fans, alums, and parents, but most importantly to our students and players.”

This achievement goes beyond basketball. It’s a proud moment for the entire Saint Patrick High School community and its widespread alumni network. Founded in 1861, St. Pat’s is the oldest all-boys Catholic high school in Chicago, and the excitement surrounding this historic milestone resonates across the city.

“This is a historic moment for St. Pat’s,” said President Dan Santucci ’02. “Our school has a proud tradition, and watching this team make history is something special. The energy and excitement from our students, alumni, and families is incredible—we can’t wait to cheer on our Shamrocks at State! I’m especially happy for Coach Bailey, who has dedicated his life to St. Pat’s and high school basketball. He’s come so close before, and to finally reach this milestone is well deserved. It’s an amazing moment to be a part of.”
